RFK Jr's hand-picked vaccine advisory panel just declared the preservative thimerosal to be dangerous due to the fact that it contains mercury. Here is why this goes against the data, and why you should care. The mercury in thimerosal is bound up in a larger molecule, which affects how our bodies store and secrete it, and its toxicity while it’s in our system. Consider pure sodium (Na), which will immediately ignite when you mix it with water but, when bound with Chloride to form table salt is entirely safe. Thimerosal’s chemical formula is C9H9HgNaO2S. It gets broken down in our body into ~25 µg of mercury per dose, in the form of ethylmercury (CH3CH2). This form gets broken down and excreted by our body, with a half-life of 2.9–4.1 days. (DOI: 10.1542/peds.2006-3363). Compare this to Albacore and Yellowfin tuna, which have up to 70 µg of mercury per 3oz can, in the form of methylmercury[CH3Hg]+ (doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2017.05.070). It is harder for our bodies to break down, and has a half-life of ~50 days (DOI: 10.1258/000456306777695654). Moving on to real-world data, a large meta-analysis of studies with over a million children found no association between thimerosal (or vaccines in general) and any type of neurodevelopmental disorder. (10.1016/j.vaccine.2014.04.085). Right now the US only uses it in ~7% of flu vaccines, but this decision will have a significant impact on global distribution. Thimerosal is primarily used in multi-dose vaccines to ensure they remain safe from bacterial contamination. These are ~2.5x cheaper to manufacture than single-dose vaccines, and are easier to transport and store. This is extremely important for saving lives in low-income countries. Countries that look to the US for guidance and scientific consensus. RFK said that this decision was for the “protection of children worldwide.” This decision may ultimately hurt them instead. #science #health #stem #vaccines
