Why is this class of pomegranate juice healthier than this energy drink? Even if you were to perfectly match up the sugar, salt, and vitamins shown on the label. Imagine you're building a house. The items you'd find on a Nutrition Facts label are called the functional ingredients. Composed of both the macronutrients, the protein, fat, carbs, and fiber, which are like the wood, metal, and cement that make up the main structure of a house, and also the micronutrients, the vitamins and minerals that are like the screws, nails, glue, and wiring that hold it all together. But who wants to live in a basic box? natural foods like fruits and vegetables contain phytonutrients, a class of thousands of different compounds containing subcategories like polyphenols and carotenoids. Eating these is like adding insulation to your walls, polishing your wooden floors, weather-proofing your windows, and even adding some soothing artwork to your rooms. None of these is individually necessary for your survival, but eating foods with a wide range of these compounds has been linked to increased life expectancy and lowered risk of almost every single disease. But how to choose the right foods. The best practical What I've seen so far is in Dr. Sarah Ballantyne's recent book, Nutravor. It gives a great framework to ensure that you're rotating through all the right categories of foods to ensure that you're getting a proper range of phytonutrients. This keesh came from a recipe where she gives five categories of swappable ingredients. This time I made it with broccoli, onions, and mushrooms as my main veggies, but next time I might swap it out for peppers and kale. Delicious and nutritious. I made a big batch and froze them for easy, reheatable meal.

Additional notes

Fun fact: most store bought grenadine is basically just colored corn syrup, but you can make a delicious homemade version by just simmering pomegranate juice on the stove to reduce it down, adding sugar to taste. @Sarah Ballantyne, PhD #health #science #nutrition #edutok
